Talking to Tain

8 August 2019

Tain Bruce
F-Teamer Tain Bruce took on USA Nationals in Stanford, California just one week after British Summer Champs.

Scottish Fly Queen, Tain Bruce, wrapped up her 2018-2019 racing season at the US Phillip 66 National Championships in Stanford, California. In her main event, the 100 Fly, she put in a sub minute effort, placing 5th in the C Final with a time of 59.40. This was 0.18 seconds faster than her heats swim and not far off her career best time of 57.55, an excellent effort given Bruce has been in recovery for a broken toe since British Champs in May.

Bruce also put in some solid Free swims just a week after competing at British Summer Champs. Her 100 Free time of 56.16 seconds placed her 38th at the US competition. And, on the final day of the meet, she competed in the splash and dash, the 50 Free, to place 47th in a time of 26.16 seconds.

We caught up with Bruce to find out more about her US Nationals experience and her thoughts on her performances at the meet.

Tain scored the best viewing spot at the meet!

How do you feel the competition went for you?

I've really enjoyed racing out here at US Nationals. It was exciting to finish the season with an international racing opportunity. Coming off the back of a broken toe injury in May, I am really happy with my performance at this meet.

What are some of the key takeaways from your performances at the Championships?

The biggest difference between competing in the US and competing in the UK is the depth of talent they have in the US. It was more important than ever to race fast in the morning to be in with a chance of getting a second swim in the final.

How will you use this experience to prepare you going into the 2019/2020 Olympic season?

It has definitely reaffirmed the importance of being on it in the morning in order to qualify for finals. This meet was also great for international exposure and being in and amongst some of the best in the world.

How did you get the opportunity to compete at the Championships?

I was selected by Scottish Swimming as an elite group of senior athletes to be competitive at this meet.

Tain Bruce
US Nationals is Tain's second racing event in the States this season, having also competed in the Pro Swim Series in Des Moines, Iowa.

You swam at the US Pro Swim Series earlier this season; did this make you feel more confident going into the competition?

Competing at the US Pro Swim Series in Des Moines, Iowa earlier this year definitely made me feel more confident going into this meet. I was more aware of the different ways the Americans run their competitions so that was one less thing to worry about which allowed me to focus solely on my racing.

Is it different competing at the US Nationals, compared to the British Champs?

It is very different competing at US Nationals as opposed to British Championships. For one, the atmosphere is completely different. The Americans are really big on 'team' and it creates a really positive and motivating atmosphere which we were able to latch onto.

What did you enjoy most about competing internationally?

I enjoy racing against different people, as in the UK you get used to racing the same people all the time. It's good to be put outside my comfort zone and into unfamiliar territory which spurs me on to be a better athlete in the long run.

Now that the competition is over, what are your plans?

I'm lucky enough to be spending another week out here in California with my boyfriend, Jack. We are staying in a coastal town called Half Moon Bay so I'm looking forward to some down time out here before heading back to the UK and spending some time with my family.

A well-deserved break for Tain to conclude a rollercoaster of a season and a great international competition!
