F-Teamers off to European SC Champs

5 December 2019

European Short Course Champs
Laura Stephens is ready to race at the European Short Course Championships this week

The LEN European Short Course Championships begin this week in Tollcross, Glasgow and mark the last major international meet in the UK until long course and Olympic qualifying season are officially underway. F-Teamer and World Championship finalist Laura Stephens will be representing Team Great Britain at the meet.

Joined by the likes of Duncan Scott and Georgia Davies, this will be Stephens's debut at the LEN European Short Course Championships. In recent international meets she has impressed with finals swims at both the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2019 FINA World Championships and her selection for the GB team is a mark of this success. Stephens has her eyes set firmly upon qualifying for Tokyo 2020 and with an impressive 2019, this will be yet another opportunity to prove herself on the international stage.

When asked about the importance of this meet in the leadup to the long course season, Stephens said she "certainly feels that this is a good meet to see where all my training has brought me up to this point in the season. Being up against Europe's best will be a good challenge, and I?m looking forward to racing. It will be a good opportunity to pick up on the things I have been improving, and also things I can work on into the long course season." At European Short Course Championships Laura will be focussing on swimming her races with the best process possible, keeping in mind her technical skills such as turns which are so important in short course racing.

Attention will also be on Portuguese F-Teamer Diana Duraes who has already secured her place at Tokyo 2020. As the current national record holder in the 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m Freestyle, events she is well placed to wrap up short course season with continued success in the 200m, 400m and 800m Freestyle.

Next on the calendar is the English Short Course Championships which run from 5th-8th December in Sheffield with our F-Teamers going head to head at Ponds Forge. Sheffield's own Amy Bell will step up to the blocks in the 200 IM and the 200m butterfly looking to take home a few medals and match last year's success. Mia Slevin will be keeping busy with the 100m and 400m Freestyle on day 3, and the 50m and 100m Backstroke events. Fly queen Harriet West will be keeping her races short and sweet as she goes into both the 50m and 100m Butterfly. Emily Ford, Candice Hall, Freya Colbert, Charlotte Atkinson, Sophie Freeman, Lana Broekhoven, Leah Crisp and Chloe Golding will also be joining the competition.

At the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh, from the 13th-15th of December, Kathryn Greenslade, Tain Bruce, Aimee Willmott, Pia Murray and Jessica Fullalove will be competing at the Scottish Short Course Championships. Kathryn Greenslade will be racing in the women's 100m and 200m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke. Jess will be traveling up from Bath National Centre to race in the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke events.

European Short Course Champs
Kat Greenslade and Aimee Wilmott are going head to head in the 200m Freestyle

Aimee will be joining Kat in the 200m Freestyle on day 3 so this race will be one to watch. In addition to the 200m Freestyle, Aimee will be swimming in her favoured events, the 200m and 400m Individual Medley. Aimee noted that "last year at Scottish Short Course I swam a really quick 200m backstroke, but my 400IM was miles off the pace so this year I'm looking for a fast swim!"

European Junior Swimmer Pia Murray will race in the 100m and 200m Butterfly as well the 100m and 200m Backstroke. Tain Bruce will also be racing all three butterfly events.

Finally, our Irish superstar Ellen Walshe will be racing at Irish Short Course in Dublin from the 12th - 15th December.
