Victorian Country Assistance Scholarship

5 December 2019

Lulu Mcleod
Lulu Macleod has won gold at the Australian Age Championships since receiving the scholarship

We are excited to announce that applications are now open for the Funkita Victorian Country Assistance Scholarship to support the development of talented swimmers in country Victoria. The scholarship's aim is to support the swimmer to attend more meets in Melbourne to gain experience and to continue to improve in preparation for Nationals next year.

As part of the scholarship, Funkita will provide the winner with $500 cash to assist with expenses associated with competitive swimming such as travel, accommodation and competition entry fees to key Victorian or national meets. The winner will also receive $1000 of Funkita products.

Lulu Macleod, originally from the Wodonga City Swimming Club, is a past recipient of the scholarship. Lulu now swims with the Griffith University Swimming Club and has recently taken home gold in the 200m Freestyle at the Australian Age Championships in April earlier this year. We caught up with Lulu to find out how winning the scholarship has helped with the progression of her swimming career.

What were some of the challenges you found yourself dealing with as a swimmer in regional Victoria?

Swimming in a small regional town did have its ups and downs. The main obstacle was not having the option of racing more often in Melbourne. I saw that the next step in improving my performance was competing at a higher level in a more diverse environment. Traveling and planning took up lots of time and overall was definitely expensive. Also being in the country meant that my access to expert advice was limited.

Why did you decide to apply for the Scholarship?

I was keen to compete in Melbourne more often and I believed that the scholarship would assist this greatly. I also was a massive fan of Funkita and all their swimwear, and if it meant I could get my hands on more goodies I was 100% going to go for it.

How did the scholarship help the progression of your swimming career?

As this was the first prize I ever received, I was very excited as I had been working hard in and out of the pool and being rewarded with the scholarship was just the icing on the cake! It definitely gave me a confidence boost whilst also aiding with the many expenses required in the sport such as accommodation, travel, training gear, togs and race suits! Because of this I was well equipped for my first ever National Championships. Recently my family and I have moved away from Victoria, but the region will forever hold a special place in my heart.

How has your relationship with Funkita developed since being awarded the Country Scholarship?

I was fortunate enough to do one of the catalogue shoots for the brand which I am still currently doing. This was just one of the awesome opportunities I was lucky enough to take advantage of. Since being awarded with the scholarship my relationship with the Funkita team has grown greatly which I am utterly thankful for. The whole team are so lovely and are only a text message away if I need a hand with anything!
