Meet Marina

21 July 2020

Marina
Marina is sure to be seen with a big smile on her face, living life to the fullest.

Originally hailing from Mission Viejo, California, Marina spent 4 years racing for the Arizona State University Sun Devils where she was captain of the team under coach Bob Bowman, excelling in both Butterfly and Freestyle events. She recently moved from Virginia Tech, where she trained under Sergio Lopez Miro, to the warmer climes of Florida. We caught up with Marina to discuss how she has kept positive during the pandemic and what made her want to return to swimming after retirement.

How have you kept motivated during isolation? How has the pandemic affected you?

The pandemic has been tough especially in the US, there are definitely times when I feel a bit down because there are no competitions in sight. It's really been helpful to have my boyfriend, Norbert Szabo around because he is always looking at the positives of every situation. I also know that this is temporary and I have to do my part to keep myself healthy as well as those at risk around me.

Marina & Norbert
Marina and Norbert are both part of the F-Team and are now based in sunny Florida in the US.

What made you want to return to swimming after retirement?

I retired in 2016 after I graduated from Arizona State, I figured with my NCAA career being finished that I should start working on my professional career. I was disappointed in how my swimming career ended so I didn't touch a pool for over two years. I had such a negative relationship with the sport and I felt like I hadn't lived up to expectations when I retired. However, I still had that competitive drive in me so I tried several different sports including rowing, fencing, archery, ballet and CrossFit but none of them fit the hole that swimming had left in my life. It was by chance that I started swimming again, in late 2018 I went to the pool to get a little tan and just watch practice and the master's coach suggested that I just hop in and do a few laps. I refused but he convinced me and as soon as I dove in I knew that this is what was missing in my life. The rest happened so quickly, shortly after, I broke a couple of master's national records and decided to register for USA Swimming and within 3 competitions back I got my first Olympic Trials cuts in the 50 and 100 free.

Tell us something interesting we may not know about you..

I have a sausage dog named King Louis the Sun Wiener.

What are your goals outside of swimming?

After swimming I hope to continue my education in linguistics, specifically I would like to focus my research on language acquisition in refugee communities.

We wish all the best to Marina and hope that all of our US friends are staying safe and healthy.
