Powering Through British Champs

30 April 2019

Honey Osrin, Sophie Freeman and Laura Stephens
F-Teamers Honey Osrin, Sophie Freeman and Laura Stephens smashed out some fantastic results at British Champs.

The British Champs were a big one for our UK F-Teamers. As the qualifying event for World Champs, World Junior Champs and European Junior Champs the pressure was on but they rose to the challenge, winning so many medals we lost count.

There were a number of impressive results from our swimmers, but our junior athletes really held their own against some tough competition with 3 making Open finals: Katie Shanahan, Honey Osrin and Sophie Freeman.

Katie Shanahan, Sophie Freeman and Honey Osrin
Katie, Sophie and Honey all made Open finals at British Champs!

15 year old Katie had a fantastic meet, breaking record after record. She took down the British age group record in the 200 IM as well as updating the Scottish junior records in the 200 and 400 IM and the 200 Back. Her performance in the 400 IM Open final was particularly impressive, coming 5th in an incredibly competitive event against top guns Aimee Willmott, Abbie Wood and Amy Bell.

Honey, one of our newest F-Teamers, went in strong in her Junior finals where she won Gold in the 50 and 200 Free, 200 IM and 100 Back. Honey made the Open final for the 200 backstroke and managed to set a new personal best time of 2.12.53, which was under the qualifying time for the European Junior Champs.

Sophie achieved several European Junior times across the 6 day meet which guaranteed her a spot on her first GB Team. Highlights for her include Gold in Junior 50 Fly, Silver in Transition 100 Fly, as well as coming in 7th against the best in Britain in the Open Final for 200 Fly.

Aimee Willmott
Aimee's 400 IM time has her 5th in the world this year.

The young guns weren't the only ones smashing it out in the pool. We had a number of Open finals that were Funkita athlete heavy. In the 400 IM Aimee Willmott took out the Gold, while Abbie Wood came second, with Amy Bell and Katie rounding out the top 5 in 4th and 5th place respectively. Our F-Team also flew into the Open finals in the 100 and 200 Fly. In the 100 we had Charlotte Atkinson in Silver, Laura Stephens just behind in Bronze, with Harriet West and Tain Bruce just a few seconds out in 5th and 6th place. The 200 was hotly contested, but Laura managed to score a Silver with Charlotte in 4th, Ciara Schlosshan in 5th and young gun Sophie in 7th.

Leah Crisp really went the distance in the 800 and 1500 Free, earning Gold in both, while she put in a solid Silver performance in the 400 Free - her first British titles! Elizabeth Harris was also a big winner at the event, bringing home a Silver in the 200 Free and Bronze in the 50 and 400 Free in the Transition age group.

Bath swimmer Jess Fullalove impressed in the 200 Back, swimming a huge PB and breaking the 2:10.00 barrier to win Gold and become British Champion. Jess completed her medal haul in the 100 Back where she won silver. Her teammate Georgia Coates also made the podium at British Champs, taking Bronze in the 200 Free.

Commonwealth Games Breaststroker Jocelyn Uylett's form is looking fantastic. She came 1st in the 100 Breast and 3rd in 200 Breast, and has just been announced as part of the World Uni Games team.

There was a HUGE number of medals won by our F-Team! In addition to those mentioned above, these F-Teamers also topped the podium or made it to finals:
