Team GB Looking Strong

2 May 2019

Aimee Willmott
Aimee Willmott has scored a spot on her 5th World Champs Team.

Following on from fantastic results at British Champs, Team GB have announced their swimmers for two major international events: the FINA World Champs and World Uni Games. Leading into the 2020 Olympics swimmers are looking to get some serious international racing under their belts so qualification for these teams has been key for their Olympic prep.

The World Champs team from Great Britain is 25 swimmers strong and includes 4 Funkita sponsored athletes Aimee Willmott, Laura Stephens, Jess Fullalove and Georgia Coates. These athletes will be putting in the hard yards in the pool before heading to Gwangju, South Korea in July.

Stirling based F-Teamer Aimee Willmott qualified in the 400 IM, making this her 4th World Championships for Team GB. Finishing with a time of 4:36.98 she secured her place on the team. Aimee's time currently ranks her 5th in the world.

Laura Stephens
Laura flew into her first World Champs team.

F-Teamer Laura Stephens swam a huge personal best time in the 200 Fly to finish second. Her time of 2:07.96 was 0.02 shy of the consideration time. British Swimming selected Laura as one of their wild cards, which is only fitting after such an amazing swim.

Bath swimmer Jess Fullalove also impressed team selectors with a big personal best time in the 200 Back breaking the 2:10 barrier to win Gold and become British Champion. Jess also finished second in the 100 Back so she will be a serious contender in that event as well.

Jess's teammate Georgia Coates also made the team as part of the women's 4 x 200 Free Relay where Team GB are hoping to secure a relay position for the Olympic Games next summer in Tokyo.

The other major international event on the swimming calendar is World University Games, which will be held in Naples, Italy July 3-14. Being the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympics, it's the perfect opportunity for our F-Teamers to get to compete on the world stage. With 5 UK Funkita athletes selected for the team, it is set to be an unmissable event.

Loughborough University is really bringing the goods, with teammates Jocelyn Ulyett, Charlotte Atkinson and Abbie Wood all making the World Uni Games team.

Jocelyn Ulyett and Abbie Wood
Loughborough teammates Jocelyn and Abbie are geared up for World Uni Games.

Jocelyn is no stranger to international competition, having already competed at the Commonwealth Games and World Champs. After making the consideration times in both the 100 and 200 Breast Jocelyn was a shoe in for the team.

Abbie also has Comm Games and World Champs experience under her belt, which will give her an edge going into this event. The IM swimmer crushed both the 200 and 400 and made selection times in both events.

Fly Queen Charlotte is a veteran in the sport having already raced at two Comm Games as well as joining her teammates at World Champs. Her Gold medal winning time in the 50 Fly was .37 short, but she managed to swim onto the team after making a 58.30 in the 100 Fly.

A new addition to the F-Team, 20 year old backstroker Chloe Golding, will also be joining Team GB in Naples. As her first international event on the Funkita squad we're excited to give her all the support she will need leading up to the event.

Rounding off this fantastic team is Scottish swimmer Kat Greenslade. After gaining international race experience swimming in 3 finals at the Comm Games last year we can't wait to see what Kat will be able to do in Naples!

The road ahead will be tough as they put in some serious kms to get prepped for these massive events, but we know they've got it in them - Bring on July!
