Diving into World Champs

12 June 2019

Anabelle Smith
Funkita F-Teamers are ready for World Champs.

With FINA World Championships around the corner, kicking off on July 12th and running through July 28th, our F-Team divers have been put to the test to earn a spot on their national teams. With 5 Funkita divers from 4 different countries heading to Gwangju next month it will be a truly international event.

Melissa Wu
Olympian Melissa Wu has made the Australian team once again!

From our home Down Under two Funkita veterans, and synchro partners, qualified for the team over the weekend at Diving Open Nationals, Melissa Wu and Anabelle Smith. After Gold medal finishes in the Women's Platform and Women's 3m Synchro respectively, both Melissa and Anabelle dove their way onto the Australian World Champs team.

Krysta Palmer & Lizzie Cui
US based athletes Krysta Palmer (left) and Lizzie Cui (right) are both heading to Gwangju next month.

Across the Pacific, two of our athletes have been working hard towards their diving goals to secure their spot on their national teams. Krysta Palmer, former University of Nevada diver, cemented her position on Team USA when she won Gold at the Team USA Champions Series in the Women's 3m Synchro. 2016 Olympian and recent F-Team recruit, Lizzie Cui, will also be competing in South Korea. The NCAA All American has been training hard at Louisiana State University which paid off! Lizzie was named as part of the New Zealand World Champs team at the end of April.

Leong Mun Yee
Leong Mun Yee has secured a spot on her 8th World Champs team.

One of the most experienced athletes on the F-Team is Malaysia's Leong Mun Yee (Angela). Gwangju will be Angela's EIGHTH World Championships, having first competed at the World Champs in Montreal in 2005. With a diving career that has spanned well over a decade and still qualifying for national teams at age 35, Angela is unquestionably a legend on the diving board! She is currently in China with the Malaysian diving team, training ahead of the event.
