UK F-Teamers Ready for British Trials

8 April 2021

Candice Hall UK Swimmer

Next week, one year later than planned, the British Trials will finally take place for Team GB at the London Aquatic Centre from the 14th-18th April. The meet is a chance for swimmers to swim benchmark times mid-season before looking to improve in the Summer. This year it will look very different. Dubbed the 'British Swimming Selection Trials' only the very top British swimmers have had the opportunity to enter. Very few heats, very fast swimming, and very few specific times to target for the swimmers in the pool. This year the selection policy is based on consideration times. Swim under that time and you will be considered for a space, not guaranteed as in previous years. There is then the potential for those swimmers who are very close or in tough competitions to battle again at the European Championships. So, with all the uncertainty, swimmers will be aiming to swim as fast as possible to bag a spot on the team headed to Tokyo! The first swimmers with a seat on the plane should be announced on April 21st.

On day one, veteran F-Teamer Aimee Willmott, will make her bid to qualify in the women's 400m Individual Medley

'My dream came true in London 9 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. It will be very surreal stepping up to the block to make my campaign for the third time, but I'm really looking forward to the challenge. It never gets easier but as I've got older I have learned to try and enjoy the trials a lot more. After all, this could be one of my last competitive races.'

Last year Coivd-19 almost crushed that dream for many swimmers but for some, a 12-month delay has meant more time to prepare, fine tune, work even harder and come back with more fire in their belly.

Having been in water since last June, Laura Stephens is looking for some fast swims. With the 100m and 200m Butterfly to look forward to, PBs are the only thing on her mind. With a current personal best of 2:07.62 Laura is looking in fine form. 'After a very tough year (for everybody) it would be great to swim well. The 200m Butterfly is my main event, and that is the one I have been working towards in training. I'm really excited to see the hard work I have put in pay off.'

Candice Hall is also looking to push for Qualification. Candice will swim the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle as well as the 200m IM. With a 200m Freestyle PB of 2:00.51 Candice is looking to finish top 4 in the event. 'I'm really looking forward to racing the 200m Freestyle as I believe I am in really good shape and I know there's lots of opportunities up for grabs in that event, especially with relays. I would love to PB in every event but my main focus is to finish top 4 to be considered for relay selection

However, selection isn't on everyone's mind. Some of our younger F-Teamers, who are fast enough to qualify, will be looking to gain experience swimming at Trials to better prepare themselves for 2024!

Katie Goodburn is looking to do just that. With over 12 months without any official competition she's excited to finally step up to the block. With a focus on improving her times this season ahead of the Commonwealth Games next year, she will race the 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke events at Trials. 'I am mostly looking forward to my 100m Breaststroke where I feel I can make the most improvement. I have been working a lot on my underwater and technical elements over the last year. The only thing I'm a bit worried about is wearing a face mask poolside as that will be new for me.' Katie will also be looking to swim close to the Team Scotland Commonwealth Games targets for next year's games in Birmingham.

Freya Colbert will have plenty of racing to do next week as she also looks to better herself in the junior rankings worldwide. With the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m Freestyle plus the 200m and 400m IM, Freya has plenty of opportunity to race hard and fast. 'I haven't been back in the water as long as some of the swimmers there, for me it was December but I am really looking forward to both my 400s.'

For most the pandemic forced us into the same routine day in, day out, but Ciara Schlosshan moved to Bath 10 months ago and has been enjoying a different environment. 'I have entered the 100m and 200m butterfly but I am most looking forward to the 200m. It's my favourite event to swim as it's such a tactical race and all of my training is geared towards the 200 as well. I would like to have a successful trials and get some PBs. It's been a crazy year so I am going to enjoy it and feel grateful to be racing at the London Games pool in the midst of a pandemic!'

Charlotte Evans is also very grateful to be competing at the Trials, especially as it's at the London Aquatic Centre. With seasonal best times of 1:02.00 and 2:12.00 in the 100m and 200m Backstroke events Charlotte is aiming to better them and finish on the podium.
