British Swimming Selection Trials 2021

19 April 2021

Ciara Schlosshan Leah Crisp

A huge congratulations to all the F-teamers who competed at the British Swimming Selection Trials. Despite the challenges they have faced this past year, with the lack of pool time and endless zoom sessions, the competition was filled with countless PB's, medals and qualification times.

There were brilliant swims from day one, kicking off with the 200m Freestyle, which had Candice Hall and Mia Slevin in the final with both achieving personal best times. Aimee Willmott had a phenomenal swim in the 400m IM, finishing first and under the consideration time for Team GB. She took just over 2 seconds off her PB, touching the wall in 4:35.70. Freya Colbert and Katie Shanahan also joined her in the final with Katie finishing 4th and Freya in 5th.

Laura Stephens had a storming couple of days, starting with the 100m Butterfly. With a close finish she touched the wall in 2nd, just outside of the consideration time. After getting a PB in the heats, she broke it again in the final, in the time of 57.98. Harriet West and Tain Bruce (8th) improved on their times from the heats. Harriet was just over a second off her PB, placing 6th (59.79).

Honey Osrin PB'd in the heats of the 100m Backstroke and again in the final (1:01.64) where she finished 7th. Charlotte Evans closely followed her in 8th. Chloe Golding, Katie Shanahan, and Sophie Freeman also competed in heats. The 200m Breaststroke saw Joceyln Ulyett swim her way to a bronze medal in a time of 2:24.40, which is 1 second off the qualification time. Katie Shanahan also raced in the heats.

All F-Teamers who competed in the heats on Day 3 qualified for the finals. The evening started with Laura Stephens coming third in the 200m Butterfly, only 1.2 seconds off the qualification time. Ciara Schlosshan and Sophie Freeman also raced in that final, coming 5th and 7th. The 400m Freestyle final was filled with F-Teamers who all improved on their heat times. Leah Crisp had an excellent swim winning silver with a time of 4:14.03. It was a close finish between Freya Colbert (4th) and Mia Slevin (5th) with just .28 separating them.

Tain Bruce started off the finals on day 4, swimming the 100m Freestyle and finishing just 0.5 off her PB. Honey Osrin came 3rd in the 200m Backstroke, in a time of 2:11.76 and less than a 1 second off her PB. Charlotte Evans closely followed her in 4th and Chloe Golding was 5th. There were also big swims from the women in the 200m IM. Candice Hall won bronze in a personal best time of 2:13.67. Coming in just 0.13 seconds later was Katie Shanahan with a PB (2.13.90). Freya Colbert finished the final in 8th place after a big week - the 200m IM was her 6th event of the week.

The final day began with Leah Crisp racing to her second gold medal in the 1500m Freestyle. Imogen Clark and Jocelyn Ulyett closed the competition for the F-Team, with both swimming faster than their heat swims in the 100m Breaststroke.
