MLC Duel In The Pool

28 June 2021

Mitch Tinsley (left) and Mikayla Smith (far right) have been selected for the Universiade Team

There is no denying that the world has its eyes firmly set on Tokyo. With Paris 2024 just around the corner, however, every opportunity to race fast is crucial. Competitive experience is absolutely essential for all swimmers, in particular the rising stars of Australian Swimming who have already shown they can mix it with the big names. So 84 athletes and coaches have been selected to participate in the upcoming MLC Duel in the Pool.

FINA has postponed several competitions this year; including the World Universiade Games (China), the World Junior Open Water Championships (Seychelles) and the World Junior Championships (Kazan). Despite this, Swimming Australia has selected two teams to participate in the Duel which also features an open water event; the Australian Junior team and the Universiade Team. The highly anticipated battle will take place on August 18-21 (pool) and August 22 (open water). Blistering times was the theme at the recent 2021 Australian Trials, and it was these results which were considered to select the teams.

It may not be an international trip for our F-Teamers who were selected onto the two teams, however they will be eager to make their mark at what is arguably the most important meet of the year for them. Named on the Universiade team are Mikayla Smith (Nunawading, VIC) and Mitchell Tinsley (Chandler, QLD). Narrowly missing the A-Final at the recent Trials in the Women's 100 Breast, Smith held her nerve in the 200 Breast to place 5th in a heated battle. Mitch contested a multitude of freestyle events; qualifying for numerous finals and placing 6th in the grueling 400/800/1500 Freestyle events.

Matilda Smith (left) and Sophie Healy (far right) have been selected for the Junior Team

Despite being selected onto the Junior Team, Sophie Healy (Norwood, SA), Maximillian Giuliani (Hobart Aquatic, TAS), Tiana Kritzinger (Nudgee, QLD) and Matilda Smith (Hobart Aquatic, TAS) will be looking to knock off their competitors a few years their senior. When the lights were brightest in Adelaide just a few weeks ago, Healy shone when it mattered and excelled in front of a packed crowd. The Hobart duo showed us how it is done with multiple cracking swims in the freestyle and breaststroke events, and Kritzinger was in the mix for Olympic selection in the distance freestyle events.

These rising stars may not have booked a ticket overseas this time around, however with youth comes an element of tenacity and fearlessness which will be hard to stop come 2024. The road starts now - congratulations to these F-Teamers for being selected.
